Oscar Scherer State Park Home
to many endangered and threatened species, notably the Florida scrub
jay, Oscar Scherer State Park provides an oasis of seclusion and
natural beauty amidst the traffic and congestion that are part of
our everyday lives. Many come to the park to swim in the freshwater
lake, or fish the tidal creek, but its most important contribution
to the state is the natural habitat it provides for some of the
rarest of Florida's indigenous creatures. The park features
a well-developed, 104-site campground, with sites surrounding by
shade trees and natural vegetation. Each of the campsites has water,
electric, picnic tables, grills and fire rings. A playground and
freshwater lake offer a place to play and cool off. A popular canoeing
area, South Creek also offers both freshwater and saltwater fishing.
Ironically, you may catch bass, bream or catfish above the dam,
and snook, redfish and snapper below the dam where the water becomes
brackish. Canoe rentals are available at the campground store, as
well as snacks and supplies. Two self-guiding nature trails meander
along the creek, both offering glimpses of the prolific wildlife
that call the park home. |
